History

The origins of Goa Gajah Temple are steeped in history. The temple is said to be built in the 9th century as a meditation sanctuary for monks living in the region. The intricate carvings on its facade depict mythological figures and animals. The temple has immense Hindu and Buddhist influences.

No one knows how or when this cave appeared in the region. The origin of the cave is still a mystery; however, according to a tale, it was created by the fingernail of the giant named Kebo Iwa. As per this story, the temple probably dates to the 11th century.

Goa Gajah Temple holds immense spiritual significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. The temple's name, which translates to Elephant Cave, is thought to have originated from the nearby Petanu River, whose waters once flowed through the temple's complex, resembling an elephant's shape.
