Review: Jatiluwih Rice Terraces
Photos
Let’s start big picture. What makes this place stand out?
As parts of Bali become increasingly developed, it takes more and more work to discover its truly special spots that'll make your jaw drop. Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, a part of the traditional Balinese subak system of farming, is one such place. The UNESCO World Heritage site requires effort to get to—just hire a private driver—but once you're here, the hiking trails and scenery are amazing.
Fun! So what can we expect from the place itself?
Jatiluwih is all about the views, sure, but what's really remarkable is its water system, which has been used by Balinese farmers for centuries. What you see here also depends on the time of year; the greenery is less lush during the harvest (April to May, and October to November).
Got it. How easy is it to get around?
You can be an adventurous soul and navigate your way here on a scooter, but we suggest hiring a driver with a comfortable air-conditioned car. For breaks, stop along the roadside and sample the rice grown—well, right here.
That sounds cool. All said and done, what—and who—is this best for?
This spot is great for anyone who loves landscapes, photography, and hiking. It's off the main tourist trail, so you won't be fighting crowds.
