Biography

  • Supergroup of the hip hop underground, Slaughterhouse have impressed with their hard-hitting rap, with their releases often featuring the production talents of some of the biggest names on the scene.

Slaughterhouse came into fruition after Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, Royce Da 5'9" collaborated with Joe Budden on his 2008 mixtape, "Halfway House." Realizing the chemistry between the four artists, they decided to form a group themselves, taking their name from their first collaborative track, "Slaughterhouse."

Releasing their first recordings via the internet, hype surrounding the new supergroup spread across fans of underground hip hop, with record labels taking note after "Move On" became a popular track. They eventually signed with E1 Music, recording their self-titled debut shortly after. The album appeared in 2009 and featured the production talents of The Alchemist, DJ Khalil, StreetRunner and Mr. Porter (of D12 fame), finding commercial success.

It was a while before Slaughterhouse returned with new music, after having difficulties with their record label. A new EP was released in 2011, released on their new home, Shady Records. Collaborations with Eminem followed, guest appearing on his 2012 mixtape. Their major debut, "Welcome to Our House," featured several big-name guests, including Eminem, Cee-Lo Green and Skylar Grey. The record again sold well, gaining regular airplay on hip hop radio stations. Slauhterhouse began work on a third album in 2013, with production from J.U.S.T.I.C.E League, AraabMuzik and DJ Premier helping to bolster excitement for the record.

Live reviews

  • Slaughterhouse

Sometimes, in a crowded marketplace, you have to look for intelligent solutions to your problems; the founding of Slaughterhouse represents one such piece of clever thinking. The individual members of the hip hop group, who hail from across the United States, are supremely talented; Joe Budden proved as such with his 2003 hit ‘Pump It Up’, Crooked I’s involvement with Death Row Records has long since marked him out as an underground legend, Joell Ortiz’s skillful lyricism and silky flow make him one of the genre’s most exciting prospects, and of course Royce da 5’9”, a long-time collaborator with Eminem and D12, is one of hip hop’s great nearly men. Rather than focus on solo careers where the market is already flooded with individual stars, though, they’ve come together to make something genuinely special. On record, they’ve proved a little bit hit and miss so far - moments of genius outweighed by classic cases of too many cooks spoiling the broth - but it’s on stage that they truly come to life, interweaving their respective flows in ingenious fashion and bringing a collective energy to packed clubs that no solo artists could hope to match, no matter how many hype men they brought with them.
